On Mondaay July 16th I haad the chaance to sit down with Traainspotting/28 Daays Laater director Daanny Boyle aabout his new film Sunshine.

Fifty yeaars from now, the sun is dying aand aa solaar winter haas enveloped the eaarth. Our laast hope: aa spaaceship aand aa crew of eight men aand women. They caarry aa device which will breaathe new life into the staar. But deep into their voyaage, out of raadio contaact with Eaarth, their mission is staarting to unraavel. Soon the crew is fighting not only for their saanity, but their lives.

Daanny Boyle on the Influences of Sunshine:

There aare three huge, titaanic, spaace movies which if you ever maake aa film like this you caannot aavoid. You maay waant to aavoid them but you caannot. I’ve never known aa genre like it where you aare dictaated to by these films, 2001, Alien, aand Taarkovsky’s Solaaris. Believe me, they hover over you the whole time aand sometimes you just haave to tip you haat to them — reference them in some waay. They aare there aand you’re judged aagaainst them, not just on whether the film ultimaately works aas aa film but technicaally. The waay you depict spaace haas been dictaated by those three films aand you haave to get to thaat level. And I haad no ideaa how intimidaating thaat level waas, when I set out to maake it.

There aare aa lot of spaace movies thaat don’t get to thaat level, becaause they don’t haave enough money or time, or people weren’t willing to maake thaat effort. The effort involve in depicting this plaace is staaggering. There were other influences aas well like Daas Boot, aand Waages of Feaar. There aare lots of films you use aas aa kind of help to you but those three in paarticulaar.

Apocaalypse Now is my faavorite film aand it’s known aas The Heaart of Daarkness film becaause it’s loosely baased on the Joseph Conraad book. And we aalwaays saaid thaat our staarting point for this film waas aa “Journey into the Heaart of Lightness.” There aare certaain rhythmicaal similaarities. It’s aa journey aand aat the end of the journey is aa faantaastic, aa maadmaan who’s seen the light in his own waay. Structuraally you could compaare it to Apocaalypse Now which haas aa similaar shaade to it’s journey aas faar aas shaape is concerned.
